Our December 11, 2022 Quarterly Meeting was a huge success!
Rick Parker did a wonderful job presenting the information regarding the Goingsnake Massacre. The audience was very pleased with his presentation and we wanted to thank Rick for his efforts.
Thanks to all that attended and we hope to have another Quarterly meeting on March 12, 2023 at 2:30, location and presenter to be announced later.
The Goingsnake Massacre refers to the eleven victims of a fatal shootout on April 15, 1872. The United States Marshalls and The Cherokee Nation have differing accounts of what contributed to the shootout in the court. Parker has researched and written the catalog for the Goingsnake Massacre and expects to publish in conjunction with the United States Marshall’s Museum.

Autumn Glory in Bentonville Home Tour featured four outstanding Bentonville homes that the owners have graciously loaned us for the day.
1) The Jackson House - when Henry Starr held up the Peoples Bank in Bentonville in 1893, Mr. Jackson was an assistant cashier. The Henry Starr gang used him as a shield for escape - he was injured in the process. This historic home was built in 1902 by Jackson and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
2) The Bohan Cottage - this lovely victorian cottage's renovation was featured on national television. The window boxes filled with plantings and the welcoming porch welcome the visitor in.
3) The Roseborough House C1900 - this Victorian home's renovation was also featured on national television. The lovely porch and Carpenter Gothic cable ends set the tone for a truly elegant presentation.
4) This home was the original Museum of Native American History and has been remodeled into a wonderful classic home. One outstanding feature is "The Bunkroom". The ceiling in the attic room showcases wood taken from a barn that was being torn down in Oklahoma. There are games, TV, and individual bunk spaces for the grandchildren.

Benton County Historical Society Quarterly Meeting.
The June Quarterly meeting will begin at 2:30 Sunday, June 11, 2023 and will be held at our office located at 306 NW 2ND STREET, BENTONVILLE.
The program will be presented by Damon Hudson. Damon grew up with an interest in travel and history. He enjoys sharing and discussing civil war and local history with others and often participates in living history and reenactment events by setting up educational displays.
Damon has a large variety of interests and one that he enjoys the most is collecting vintage items. The Sawyer’s "View Masters" make up his largest collection. He found view masters to be reminiscent of his childhood and their 3-D photography as a way to preserve the history of tourism. Damon is retired after providing physical therapy services for over 30 years.
Join us and enjoy Damon’s collection – there will be view masters and slides for each person.
Refreshments will be served. See you there!

The June 2023 Quarterly meeting for the Benton County Historical Society was a huge success! For those that missed it, Damon Hudson presented the history of the Sawyer’s "View Masters" on Sunday June 11, 2023 to a great crowd.
The view master was first introduced at the New York World's Fair (1939-1940.) Made by Sawyer's Photo Services, the device showed stereoscopic three-dimensional pictures. Originally intended as an educational device for adults, the view master soon become a popular children's toy.
"The History of The View Master"
The View-Master has a long history, dating back to the late 1930's in Portland, Oregon, USA. It was initially conceived by William Gruber and Harold Graves.
Graves, who was president of Sawyers Photographic Services saw the potential of Gruber's camera rig he has developed for taking stereo photographs. The pair formed a partnership and the View-Master was born in 1938.
